5 Essentials You Should Pack for an International Trip

As a Baton Rouge, Louisiana travel agency we get asked questions about what to pack for an international trip all the time.  Well, it’s time for your trip internationally and you’re as excited as a child on Christmas morning.  The bags are packed and next to the front door.  Uber is on their way but have you packed the 5 essential items you’ll need when traveling internationally?

Here’s a checklist to use when going over the final details before you head out:

  1. Your Passport – You will be stopped before you even get started if you forget your passport. This is essential item #1.  Perhaps you should pack it before anything else (including your underwear).  You can always buy socks or unmentionables once you get to where you’re going but you can’t easily get a passport once you’re down the road.

  2. Insurance Information – Make sure to get and keep a medical insurance card somewhere close to your person so that if you have a medical emergency abroad then it’s easy to find. Travel insurance is always a good purchase before an international trip.  Make sure that you keep the details in a travel bag so that if something happens you’re ready.

  3. Compression Socks – If you’re flight is several hours long then you may want to invest in some really good compression socks. These are easy to buy on Amazon and most department stores.  You don’t want deep vein thrombosis stopping you in your tracks and compression socks will help in preventing swelling, clots and will keep your blood circulating.

  4. Language Translation App – It can be a frustrating thing not to be able to communicate with locals.  However, there’s an easy fix.  Before you leave home, download a language translation app onto your phone and viola you’re set.  When trying to ask for directions, a great restaurant or telling someone that you’re having troubles simply pull out your phone, type or speak into the translation app and soon you’re receiving the information you seek.  These apps allow you to translate your words into any language you want at any time.  The most popular translation apps are Google Translate and iTranslate for both IOS and Android devices.

  5. Replacement Contacts, Glasses and your Favorite Brands – It’s no surprise that when you need something specific it’s not easy to find. That holds true with your favorite brand of shampoo, soap, eye contacts and readers.  Make sure and pack extras because more than likely they won’t be available in the country you’re visiting.
