Don't Wait Until it's Too Late to do the Things You've Always Wanted

I was having dinner and a nice glass of wine with my husband a few nights ago and reminiscing about our nearly 16 years of marriage…

We’ve shared so much together…

I remember when we started out – both of us had corporate jobs and very little time or money to travel.

But we still managed to have adventures together, like the time we went to Honduras with our friends on a tiny budget. We did what we had to do to travel on our small budget – stayed with our friend’s family, or in cheap hotels and hostels, and took lots of public transportation.

Ever since we went on our first trip out of the country together, we recognized the power of travel to transform our relationship with each other and with the world around us, and we made it a priority in our lives.

Instead of buying big houses and expensive cars, we chose to allocate our resources to travel experiences.

Instead of staying in corporate jobs where we were limited to 10 days of vacation per year, we both started our own businesses so we could have more control over our time.

As a result, I have few regrets. We made a lot of mistakes on those early trips, but every time we traveled we got better at it. And at least we went, even though we still laugh at how bad some of the places we stayed were!

Time flies, and it’s easy to get caught up in the day to day tasks of running a business or the demands of a high-powered career.

Now I’m a travel professional, and sometimes even I have a hard time pulling away from what I do to have real vacations with my husband. We travel a lot, but I’m typically still working while I’m away, checking email a few times per day and doing what I love, which is taking care of my awesome clients.

I treasure those times when we can truly disconnect from the world back home and enjoy our time together away from our phones and emails (even if we only do it for a few days at a time).

When I do, I find that those breaks are good for our business, and almost always lead to new ideas and growth.

I also believe that our marriage is stronger because of the trips we taken together and the memories we’ve shared – hiking the Inka trail to Machu Picchu, visiting the Great Wall in China, cruising around the British Isles, and playing with the sea lions in the Galapagos Islands.

I have some clients who waited too long to start traveling. And now they have health issues and difficulties that limit some of the adventures they can have. They find themselves with plenty of money and time to travel, but with health issues that limit the kinds of travel they can do. It’s a challenge, and even though I have great suppliers who do their utmost to accommodate travelers of all fitness levels, there are certain places they can’t go.

The most important thing I do as a travel advisor is not book trips for people. The most important thing I do is help my clients create deeper relationships with themselves, their spouses and families, and the world, through customized, experiential travel.

And through my process of Discovery, Collaboration and Planning I can do the same for you.
