Video Postcards: A Taste of Lake Orta

Tucked away in Piedmont, Italy is one of the most charming places I have ever visited. Lake Orta is a charming medieval town with amazing wine and food.

Lake Orta is not as developed as Lake Como, and preserves a natural authenticity which is something I look for when I travel. It is less flashy than Como and Maggiore. The video contains highlights of a 3-day visit I made to the area back in October 2015. The area is full of great experiences for travelers interested in wine and food.

Some of our favorite things you can do in the area include:

  • Enjoy natural beauty and amazing views
  • Visits to local bee  keepers for a tasting of local honeys
  • Visit a local cheese shop for tastes of typical cheeses of the area accompanied by wine
  • Visits to wineries for wine made from the Nebbiolo grape
  • Several Michelin-starred restaurants for fine dining, Piccolo Lago and Villa Crespi are two great examples.
  • A boat ride from the village of Orta San Giuolio to the lovely island of Isola San Giulio, and a visit to the monastery there.
  • A stroll through the medieval village for shopping.
  • Enjoying a beautiful sunset from the terrace of Hotel San Rocco.

There are not many large hotels here, but there are some charming places to stay. If you like boutique hotels, you won't go wrong with Villa Crespi. If you prefer a larger property with more amenities the Hotel San Rocco is a great option.
