Wine Vacation Idea: Vineyards and Grand Crus on Ponant Yacht Cruises

If you love great wine, this 2017 Wine Themed Cruise from Ponant is a wine lover's dream, taking you from Lisbon to Portsmouth and stopping in Bordeaux for a tasting of one of the most famous  wines of the region. I run across wine themed cruises all the time in my line of work, so you may be wondering.... Why am I featuring this one?

First of all, it's an itinerary created in partnership with the world-famous Chateau Latour, one of the oldest and most prestigious vineyards in the Medoc region of Bordeaux. You will get a chance to visit this chateau and taste it's ones in a private, exclusive tour just for guests of Ponant.

Second, Ponant is one of my favorite small ship cruise lines. Their small yachts, with a maximum capacity of 264 guests, gets you in harbors that larger ships can't reach, and you will be treated to an exclusive experience. If you've never heard of it, it's because it's exclusive and they don't do a ton of marketing in the US. The passengers onboard are sophisticated, international travelers, so you are likely to meet fellow travelers from all over the world on this cruise.

Because this is a wine-themed itinerary, there will be two wine experts on board:

  • Eric Beaumard is Manager of Le Cinq, the restaurant at the Four Seasons Hotel George V Paris which was awarded its third Michelin star in 2016. He is in charge of a team of 37, in addition to the 42-strong brigade in the kitchens and patisserie of Chef Christian Le Squer.
  • Jean-Robert Pitte is a French geographer, born 1949 in Paris. A landscape and gastronomy specialist, he isPresident of the Geography Society and has been a Member of the Institut de France (Académie des Sciences morales et politiques) since 2008. He is also President of the Mission française du patrimoine et des cultures alimentaires, charged by France’s President to prepare the request to have French gastronomy added to UNESCO’s Intangible Heritage list, as well as the Festival Livres en vignes atChâteau du Clos de Vougeot. Since 2011 he has chaired the Académie du vin de France and has beenPresident of the Canal Académie since 2012. In 2014 he was made Honorary President of Ferrières (a school of French excellence – gastronomy, hospitality and luxury).
