Before you go, however, here are five safety tips that you should know. · **Visas and Borders in Paraguay** Residents from the US by air may obtain a visa on arrival at the Silvio Pettirossi International Airport in Asuncion. This visa is multiple entry with a validity of up to ten years. If you are planning to enter Paraguay by land or by boat, you must obtain a visa before departure. The prices and conditions for the visas vary depending on nationality and you can only pay for your visa with US dollars. · **How to Get Around Paraguay** The roads in the major cities of Paraguay are fairly decent but are terrible in the rural areas. Buses are the primary means of transportation and depending on what you pay for can even have cushy reclining seats and air conditioning. The tickets are quite cheap too. You could also use a metered taxi in the capital and other major cities. Just try to make sure that you book before leaving your hotel. Your hotel should also be able to recommend a reputable company. · **Diseases and Medical Treatment in Paraguay** There are several diseases in Paraguay so you should try to get the necessary vaccinations for them, update the routine ones and take lots of precautionary measures against being bitten by mosquitos. Yellow fever, dengue fever, Zika virus, and Malaria are the diseases to watch out for. Leishmaniasis is also another common health problem in Paraguay. It is carried by sand-flies so avoid being bitten by those too. You’ll also need vaccinations against Hepatitis A and Typhoid. Practice good hygiene and although water quality is okay in the major cities of Paraguay, you should avoid it in Chaco where it is as salty as the sea. If you visit the rural areas, use only treated or boiled water for the duration of your stay. Medical treatment is available in Asuncion, Ciudad del Este, and Encarnación and we’d advise that you go for private clinics. If you have medication that you need to take regularly, you should take them alongside a doctor’s prescription on your visit as you do not want to be stranded if you do not find it.
