Those of you who know me, know that my husband Lance is a Certified Safety Professional who consults with companies about safety issues. So, here is a blog post of on how to safely open a bottle of champagne. This is an important skill that is tested in the Certified Sommelier exam and is a good way to impress your friends at your next party, or at the very least, avoid putting their eye out.

The bubbles in that bottle of champagne or sparkling wine are under enormous pressure, and an out of control champagne cork becomes a projectile. The best way to see the proper way to do this is the video below, where Master Sommelier David Glancy demonstrates the way to silently, safely, and professionally open a bottle of sparkling wine.

Key points to remember:
  • Make sure the bottle is properly chilled.
  • Always hold the bottle at a 45 degree angle as you open it
  • Point the cork away from any person in the room
  • Keep control of the cork as you gently slide it out of the bottle.
