Located near the River Spey, it has long been known as the Mecca of the country’s single malt whisky industry. And there is a very good reason for that designation. Its home to more than 45 distilleries and host to one of the world’s most beloved homage to malted barley, the Spirit of Speyside Whisky Festival. Some of the region’s most exalted whisky distilleries are a part of the country’s highly publicized Whisky Trail. One of the oldest is tucked away on the banks of the River Lossie, near the region’s capital. Known the world over as [Glen Moray](http://www.glenmoray.com/), they’ve been producing aromatic, fruity, multifaceted, delicate whiskies since the late 1800s. One of their most recent gems is the Classic Port Cask Finish. It sports a beautiful golden hue and a toasted vanilla aroma that beckons “come hither” to all within close proximity of an open bottle. Another favored stop on the trail is located near Josie’s Well, in Glenlivet Parish. Not surprisingly, it’s known as the [Glenlivet Distillery](http://us.theglenlivet.com/). The masters there have been at their craft since the early 1800s. Unlike many other Scottish distilleries, they take a pass on the peat and metal washbacks. Instead, they use a drying method and wooden ones all their own. As a result, their whiskies tend to have long, well-balanced finishes, gorgeous color and remarkable nose appeal. The long list of other notable whisky distilleries in Moray Speyside includes, but doesn’t end with Strathisla, Macallan, Glenfiddich, Aberlour, Cragganmore and Cardhu. [Strathisla](http://www.chivas.com/en/int/heritage/strathisla/) is widely considered to be the oldest one in the region and [Cardhu](http://www.malts.com/index.php/en_row/Our-Whiskies/Cardhu/The-Distillery) frequently receives recognition for its distinctly female roots.
